One-to-One Coaching

MARVEL Coaching for Busy Law Firm Leaders

You have built the career. This is about building the life that was supposed to come with it.

One-to-one coaching on the six pillars of a life fully lived — for managing partners, founders and senior lawyers who carry the firm all day and forget to carry themselves.

Book a Call

The MARVEL model — six overlapping gold circles labelled Meaning, Autonomy, Relatedness, Values, Experience and Learning, with Happiness at the centre.
Richard Boyatzis

“A magnificent synthesis of several streams of research on “the good life.” But beware, Aristotelous pops the balloon of thinking that being thin, rich and famous is a good thing. In true Greek fashion, he returns to the wisdom of Thales of Miletus and the other Seven Sages, not that upstart, Socrates, who out-marketed them centuries later.”

The Quiet Problem

When the numbers work and the days don’t

Every managing partner knows the pattern, even if nobody says it aloud at partners’ meetings. The firm is growing. The targets are met. And the person holding it all together drives home most evenings feeling strangely empty.

I know the pattern from the inside. In 2017 I was promoted to senior partner at my firm, with the salary to match. A few months later I resigned — without a Plan B. What I went looking for afterwards became a 300-page book on what actually makes a life feel worth living. MARVEL coaching is that work, brought back to the profession I left.

Burnout in law is rarely a personal failing — it is a design flaw in how the role is built. Design flaws can be worked on.

The Framework

Six pillars of a life fully lived

MARVEL is a model I invented — the framework at the heart of The MARVEL of Happiness: six pillars that hold up a full life, and six intersections where the interesting things happen. Here is what each pillar sounds like when your week is measured in six-minute units.

Diagram of the six MARVEL pillars and their intersections: Purpose, Integration, Community, Alignment, Growth and Insight.
M
Meaning

When every hour is billable, which ones still matter?

A
Autonomy

The paradox of owning a firm and controlling nothing in your week.

R
Relatedness

Leadership in a partnership can be the loneliest seat in the building.

V
Values

What the fee pressure quietly costs you — and what it must never cost you.

E
Experience

When did work last absorb you rather than drain you?

L
Learning

The growth that begins after technical mastery runs out.

Where the pillars overlap, the book finds Purpose, Integration, Community, Alignment, Growth and Insight. Coaching is where we find yours.

The Engagement

Structure, not sympathy

1 · The wheel

We begin with a baseline: you score your life across the six pillars on the MARVEL wheel. Ten minutes of honesty that usually says more than a year of vague dissatisfaction. The shape you draw decides where we start.

2 · The work

Fortnightly one-to-one sessions, in person in Cyprus or remote, built around the pillar where your wheel dips lowest. Between sessions you work with exercises from the companion workbook — short, structured, designed for a diary measured in six-minute units.

3 · The review

At ninety days you retake the wheel and we compare shapes. What moved stays in the plan; what didn’t gets redesigned. Then we decide, together, whether the work continues.

The MARVEL wheel — a six-axis self-assessment chart scored from 1 to 10 on each pillar.

Every coaching client receives the book and the print companion workbook as part of the engagement — the same tools we use in session, yours to keep and reuse.

Fit

Who I work with — and who I don’t

MARVEL coaching is for managing partners, founding partners and senior lawyers who want structure rather than sympathy: people who respect a framework, do the homework, and would rather be asked a hard question than handed a platitude.

It is coaching, and I am careful about the boundary: it is not therapy. If what you are carrying calls for clinical support, I will say so plainly and help you find it — that, too, is part of taking the work seriously.

For coaching focused on leadership, strategy and firm growth, see Executive Coaching for Law Firm Founders & Managing Partners. The two engagements complement each other; several clients run them in sequence.

The Foundation

One model, two books

MARVEL is not a borrowed coaching formula — it is a model I invented and have developed across two books: The MARVEL of Happiness, on the six pillars of a life fully lived, and The MARVEL of Engagement, on what the same thinking unlocks at work. Part philosophy, part psychology, part the field notes of a lawyer who climbed the ladder and chose to climb down — the coaching stands on both: the person and the professional.

‘It’s a pleasure to meet Philippos Aristotelous, and he is absolutely right in his belief that the universal quest for happiness is a marvellous pursuit indeed.’

Praise for The MARVEL of Happiness

‘An impressive and timely work on the foundational ingredients for a meaningful life, written in a jargon-free and accessible style by a master of the English language… It is a book that deserves wide circulation… I highly recommend it!’

Questions

Frequently asked

Is this confidential?

Completely. The same duty of confidence you give your clients, you get from me — and as a former senior partner, I understand exactly how small the Cyprus legal market is.

How much time does it take?

One session a fortnight, plus short workbook exercises between sessions. It is designed for people whose diaries are measured in six-minute units; if you can protect ninety minutes a fortnight, you can do this.

How is this different from your executive coaching?

Executive coaching works on the firm through the leader: strategy, leadership, growth. MARVEL coaching works on the leader as a person: meaning, energy, values, fulfilment. Many clients need both — few need them at the same time.

Do we meet in person or online?

In person in Cyprus, or by video call. The wheel, the workbook and the sessions work identically either way.

What happens after ninety days?

We retake the MARVEL wheel, compare it with your baseline, and decide together whether to continue, pause, or shift the focus to another pillar. No automatic renewals, no lock-in.

Bring some MARVEL into the way you lead.
