In late 2018, just a few months after leaving my corporate role to launch my freelance legal consultancy and coaching practice, I reached out to a highly valued colleague and friend — let’s call him Tom — who had recently become a partner at a respected Nicosia law firm. I proposed a meeting to explore potential collaboration on professional development programs.

His response was respectful but clear:

“I hold you in the highest regard, but our firm does not require such services at this time.”

A fair and dignified answer.

While many lawyers in Cyprus knew me well in my former role — as a legal expert, speaker, and author — I was still an unknown in the coaching and development space. I imagine some were wondering: “How did you pivot to this new field, and how can I be sure you’re as good here as you were in law?”

And to be honest, I understood. It was new terrain for me, too.

Over the following years, I delivered programs for numerous law firms, both locally and abroad — including some not typically known for investing heavily in professional development. Bit by bit, things began to shift.

The real tipping point? Being hired by two prominent firms to deliver the Good to Marvellous program — both with glowing reviews. One of those firms happened to be Tom’s former employer.

Though he never engaged with those posts directly, it turns out he had been following. When we bumped into each other by chance at a kids’ football event in Platres, we reconnected. A few days later, we met to exchange ideas.

The result? I sent a proposal. He accepted. Later this year, I’ll deliver a program for his firm.

Reflections

  • A “no” is often just a “not yet”.

  • Reputation is the quiet engine of opportunity.

  • Consistent effort and visible communication are equally vital: Delivery builds substance. Visibility builds recognition.

  • Never underestimate the silent observer. Just because someone isn’t engaging publicly doesn’t mean they aren’t paying attention.

Have a wonderful week ahead — and keep sharing your journey. You never know who’s watching.

Warm regards,
Philippos
